what if she’s doctor’s last regeneration

This is her last regeneration. She can feel it in her bones.

The Earth is safe, as is the rest of the universe, as safe as she can get it. She is nearing three thousand years old and has seen so much, done so many things, and yet none of it jades her.

She has little power left. Doesn’t have quite as much energy as she did when she was younger, traipsing through time and space with a pretty young thing at her side.

She decides to spend her final life on Earth.

“What do you mean, this is the end?” Bert asks, tilting his head. He’s seen a lot of things with her. He’s done much, he’s killed the last Dalek and faced down Cybermen.

“It’s time for me to retire, Bert,” she says gently, “and Earth is the place for me.”

“Does this mean you’re going to stop… saving the world?” He asks, brow furrowed.

“Oh, of course not,” she replies with a wave of her hand. “I’ll be saving it all the time, in very small ways. But the main property of small things is that when they add up, they grow into big things. And you, Bert, you fantastic man, you’re going to be my companion.”

They settle together on the pseudonym “Mary Poppins.” It’s strangely common, like the word “doctor,” and oddly unique, like the Doctor herself.

The pseudonym was necessary. Parents don’t often hire nannies who only go by “Doctor.”
